Flash Cards: Aiding Applied Behavior Analysis Therapy



The most commonly recommended treatment for children with autism spectrum disorders is the ABA, or Applied Behavior Analysis and the biggest part of an effective ABA therapy regimen is flash cards or picture cards. It is a scientifically proven fact that to greatly improve a child’s ability to function in a classroom or other social environment as well as improving communication and learning ability. Flash Cards For fostering the mastery of new words and concepts, the picture cards or flash cards are effective tools. There are many people who think of these cards as a great way to learn new words but there are many people who do not think of these cards as a means of conveying emotions or concepts such as happy or sunny. In fact these cards are used for all of these purposes and more. Even these cards are used as a means of sparking conversation as a part of a standard intensive ABA therapy by many parents and therapists. By giving multiple views of the same thing, these cards help to teach a child, the concept of the object or idea and help them to associate the concept with the word. Along with providing examples of concepts and words, the flash cards can involve a puzzle of sorts which may require a child to figure out what is wrong with the picture, such as a door with no knob or a fish in a tree, and may help in developing reasoning and critical thinking skills.
